If you can name it... you can discuss it here (except politics & religion)! Just keep it clean, OK?

Need your ideas!

Post by cavies79 » Sat Jan 02, 2010 7:44 pm

Dear Members of Sound Machine,

I am hoping that some of you might have some ideas on the following: I am writing a new marching band show entitled "A Night at the Opera" which features popular themes from the opera.

So far, I have the following:

I. Pagliacci

II. O Sole Mio

III. ????

IV. William Tell Overture (which is from Rossini's last opera)

I am looking for ideas for the 3rd movement. I was originally looking at the Barber of Seville, but realized that the rhythms used are too difficult for a lot of high school bands.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Dennis

Ok, here are two with tie-ins to the show title.

Something from Verdi's Il trovatore (Used in the classic Marx Bros' A Night at the Opera)

Bohemian Rhapsody (from the clasic Queen album A Night at the Opera)

Even the ballad section of BH might be nice (and relatively easy).

Or you could always go with something from Phantom...
What, it should be Spartacuses??

Music is like candy; to get to the good stuff, you have to remove the rappers...

Both excellent ideas! However, I need to stay anyway from copyright issues, so the Queen selection won't work. Thanks! I like Verdi's IL Travatore. Also, like the Magic Flute.

I'm still open to more ideas.

Carmen (Bizet)
Marriage of Figaro (Mozart)
Rigoletto or Aida (Verdi)
Madame Butterfly or Tosca or La Boheme (Puccini)
Samson and Dalila (Saint-Saens)

Sandy,

I like your idea. However, since there is copyright issues, I cannot use that music for this company. :(

It has to be either public domain or original.

I think I am going with:

I. Pagliacci

II. O Sole Mio

III. Excerpts from Carmen

IV. William Tell Overture

What do you think?

Sounds good.
Yeah there are some stingy writers out there. I think John Williams is another one hard to get copy rights from.

As I understand it, it's not only about money, but usage as well. There have been issues about music from a particular artist's music being used for porno. I respect him too much to publicly mention it, e-mail me for the nome if anyone so chooses. However, about 10 years ago we worked up a closer based on the Perez Prado arrangement of "Patricia". The superintendent reamed me out because it was used for some X rated program on HBO. A whole lot of work down the drain..........Bill

Libiamo ne'lieti calici from Verdi's La Traviata would be fun.

Regarding John Williams, I don't know why some people won't look at some of his tunes from the show M Squad. The end credits for the show (aptly named "The End") is pretty hot.
