...what did y'all think about the President's education speech? Was anybody indoctrinated? The kids looked bored out of their minds to me as he droned on and on and on and on and so forth. It sounded like every speech I heard from Vice Principals when I got in trouble!

I'll be interested in seeing what my daughter thought - that is if she watched it. I told her it was her choice and she didn't seem to thrilled about listening to him speak.

I heard it was really watered down after all the flack he received for scheduling this in the first place. Nothing wrong with a Presidential pep talk, but I was curious as to why they initially were not going to make it public and available to the parents ahead of time. It seemed so secretive and mandatory; two traits that concern me. I wonder what the original plan was...

Most kids here at my school opted not to watch it. The speech was changed from something more about supporting him to strictly about staying in school. At one point there were accompanying lesson plans about what the kids could do for Obama.

When even hard-core democrats are turning on Obama, something has gone awry. This speech is just a drop in the bucket for Obama.

Ugh....I keep telling myself not to get involved in these political discussions. But really people, really? Stay in school...socialism! Work hard...he is controlling our lives! Have goals, strive for them...dictator! I'm sorry, but this backlash from the ultra conservatives is so damn laughable. Did you all think this when Reagan or Bush Sr. made a speech to this countries youth during their Presidential terms?

The whole statement that was initially planned but withdrew because of this backlash asking students what they could do to help Obama...its called problem solving, creative thinking, critiquing his policies constructively...getting the youth involved. 'What would you do if you were President?' What is so wrong about that?

On ABC's nightly news last night, they spoke with this father in Texas who had gone so far as to withdraw his son from class (parents decision, and if they feel that is what they want to do, so be it), but also had spent a week passing out fliers to other parents about Obama's socialist perspective that will be broadcast in this speech. They sat down with he and his wife and watched the speech and was asked afterwards what he thought. 'Good speech with a good message'. Exactly.

But you have not answered why the original was changed; why it was so secretive (parents were told they would not have the opportunity to read a transcript); why it was going to be mandatory; and most importantly, what the original script contained. That it was changed indicates that there was something that was at least questionable. Oh, and yes ABC is going to find someone on the extreme end to showcase. Are you surprised? That's show business which is what they do. Yes, the final product may have been a good speech with a good message, but that doesn't mean that initial concerns were invalid.

Were transcripts of previous President addresses to school kids provided? This is much ado about nothing...from the beginning. The biggest change was what I mentioned...asking kids what they could do to help the President. Opening discussion, sharing opinions. It was changed to apease the the absentmindedness of the conservative media.

And yes, I agree with you about ABC. Of course they are going to find an extreme point of view, but I think at the same time it represented the thoughts of many parents.

My point is, I think this is one of the situations where the conservative pundits are making themselves look bad, not the President. There are places to show opposition, to criticize policy, but to me, this really was stretching it. The whole healthcare issue right now, while I don't agree with a lot of the criticizm being presnted, is an area where you do just that. But a President speaking out to the nations kids about staying in school, studying and working hard, no.

I agree that the actual speech the President gave was pretty much non-controversial. I think the major problem stemmed from the "Lesson Plan" materials the Dept of Ed orginally sent out to the schools.

To the point about other presidents, however: In 1991, when President Bush ('41) gave a nearly identical speech to school kids, the democrats at the time not only protested it, but they actually called then Dept of Ed Secretary Lamar Alexander to come TESTIFY to a congressional hearing as to why the President was using school kids as props!

Politics from the left wing is no less dumb than from the right.

Chris, you know you love the debate! I don't mean to get all "reductio al hitlerum" on you, but this is the same indoctrination method the Nazis used. I'm not saying it was to the same degree, but President Obama was going to politicize this speech. He just got caught.

Very interesting and I'm not surprised! :read:

Actually, I hate debating...just not my thing (I really suck at it for one, lol). Even when good friends start talking politics and I agree with them, I'm the one that tries to change the subject.

Anyway, what proof is there that his speech was going to be all political? What do you think he would have gained from doing that?

My daughter and every other student in her advisory elected not to watch it. Their teacher, who is evidently a big Obama supporter, was not pleased but respected their wishes.

What I see may be a little different. I see conservatives & liberals aka Republicans & Democrats. on this forum as well as most others using children as a political pawn in their stupid political games. I heard a biology teacher arguing with a math teacher about the pros & cons of letting students watch the speech. What does anything in the President's speech have to do with Bio & Math? I have no idea. Why watch it in those classes? Why watch it at all? Just go on with teaching. My band isn't good enough to waste time on non-music instruction......................Bill

I understand your point of view. At the same time, I can think of worse ways to waste time in school - like your average pep assembly, for instance.

For my part, I wish the text of the speech would have been available earlier in the process. The message certainly applies to every student and their parents. Getting the text out there earlier might have defused some of the uproar. Putting out a study guide without the speech is an invitation to use one's imagination way too much. And, the person who had the idea for the, "How can we help our president?" question and his or her supervisor ought to have their heads examined!
