THIS IS ALL A MOOT POINT!
Check out the DCI web site - there will be a Parade of Champions @ Epcot on Wednesday night. Div 2/3 will be relegated to Monday & Tuesday.
How bad is this???

Hasn't anybody notice that DCI seems to be thriving on controversy lately? And all it does is keep us coming back for more.
Instead of arguing who should have more corps in Finals, DCI needs to go back to the old format they discontinued after '89. 6 for Class A-60 and 6 for Class A. Class A-60 competes first and the A corps go on last and then the placements are announced.
We need to start looking for more simple solutions. If the current format continues, there will always be a corps left on the outside looking in. If you want to continue the semifinals, then chose the Top 9 corps in each division, keep them separate and for finals showcase the Top 6 in each division. And if DCI wants to make a buck on it, create a D2/3 finals CD. In the end, the best corps are in Finals and there are no misconceptions as to who kept whom out of a spot they think they deserve.
The last point I want to make is this: I don't like a lot of things DCI is doing, but I am a drum corps fanatic and it's the only game in town that features it's smaller divisions. Regardless of the real or perceived slights. If you want to make some real changes, stop preaching to the choir. Some of us may be singing a different song, but it's still the same choir. If you disagree with something then contact your corps director. Let him do the talking. It's bound to be more effective than posting on a message board. And if you still don't like what's happening, then by all means convince your corps to stay away from DCI events or don't march. Believe me, the disappointment will still be there next season.

I've always wanted to ask...what happened to Emerald Knights in 87 finals. You won prelims by like 4pts and lot to Mandarins in finals. Was it a bad show?
Was this the biggest turnaround from prelims to finals????
Hearing a rumor that Mandarins are "considering" returning to Div 2 for 03. Sounds fishy to me..........................

Actually, it was a better show, but in DCI that's the way the cookie crumbles. Not only were we first in prelims, but we beat all the A corps as well. What happened to us in '87, '88 and '89 kep me away from drum corps for a long time. But as time shows, you either get over it or else you're the next guest on Oprah.

Emerald KNights were better, plain & simple (although that does describe the EK horn book).
This was the beginning of the Mandarins Mystique in 2/3. Nice to see B.O. D made it work for them to move to Div 1.
Who is next?

You have never said more truer words. When I first flew up from GA and heard the book, I nearly had a stroke. But as I learned the show, I realized that when you have 20 horns, you have to do what needs to be done to make the show work.
But I'll will tell you a secret: '88 hurt us a lot more than '87 ever did. Especially when we saw the same thing happening in the other 2 classes.

Was there tension between the drum line and brass? Seemed like perc. was older & more experienced and carried the corps....horns were just trying to assist. I know of lots of occasions where wide gaps in section ability has killed corps......like BAC in the early 90's, (great drums bad horns) Dutch Boy (the other way around), Glassmen just before they made top 12, etc, etc.
Shame the corps (EK) had such a shell of membership in 89....thought that show was entertaining also.

Well actually, those sections got along, or agreed to disagree. Their was a BIG problem with the color guard. they were treated as though they should have been marching with another corps. Don't ask me why. I thought it was an Iowa thing. As for the age difference, they were actually the same. The drum line had been playing together since high school, college and in the Emerald Knights since the early 80's. So they had a cohesiveness the horn line couldn't match. The horn line just had A LOT of turn over and we had to constantly rebuild it.
As for '89. after the screw job in '88, most of our experienced players either went Top 12, or quit the activity completely. We could explain away '87, but '88 was too much for people to want to deal with. Then we had to contend with a staff who thought they were in the process of creating a dynasty and were God's gift to small corps. A lot of people were cut because there were a good deal of talented people coming in to the camps. But by the time I moved in, those people stopped coming and the corps was short on members.
To tell the truth, we were running on emotion that year. It took the entire summer for that show to even feel right for me.
I'm just happy they made it back into finals in '90.

Number One: as for a seperate Div II championship format..... who would pay for it? Div II has a small number of corps.....smaller than either Div III or Div I. I'm willing to bet that DCI (who have to try and at least break even, or the whole cocept of competitive drum corps goes down the toilet) does not/will not have the financial resources to pull something like that together. As for the Ben Harloff corps.....I'll take one Ben, One Nick Angellis and one colorguard guru, and I'd take on even BD, the Cadets and the Cavies......who do you think would win??????
