Well, that depends on who you talk to from that time. Remember the show was rewritten and retaught midway through the season because of reasons I won't get into at this time.

Ben my man, it's off season, the best time to discuss "dirty laundry" stories! :3talk:

Yep Ben, you can't say "I know a secret" and then keep quiet around here.
Go ahead....it's been over 20 years so you can spill the beans.

I'll never forget the shock I had with SCV in '80. Their standstill concert record album with the Blue Devils (State Of The Art) came out in the middle of summer. They played the all-time standard "Caravan" on the record. Imagine my surprise when I saw them in Minnesota a few weeks later finding that "Caravan" had changed to "Evita".

There has to be a good story there.

Ok, I guess it's no big deal...it was simply the last year and parting of ways of hall of famers Pete Emmons and Fred Sanford from the SCV organization and the ushering in of SCV legends Ralph Hardimon and Myron Rosander .This was a bitter sweet time for those who were there in 1980 who respected and admired Pete and Fred. They will always be the greatest teachers ever in my mind. In 1981 the next year SCV won 1st place. That was 27 years ago. Hope I didn't get any beans on anyone.

Funny how things go round and round...our drum line felt the same way after 1971 when George Tuthill was let go from Garfield so this new guy could become the drum guy...Fred Sanford.

We already had Pete Emmons on board, along with Bobby Hoffman.

Uh, Ben.............you got it HALF correct. You're right when in comes to Ralph......he took over the percussion program in 1981. However, Myron was STILL marching in 1980........in fact he is the french horn soloist in 'Caravan' on the 'State of the Art' recording. I THINK you're probably thinking of Dave Owens.......he aged out with SCV in 1979, taught visual with Pete in 1980 and became the visual designer in 1981. While Dave was no Pete Emmons (and no one ever will be), he did have his own unique style and was responsible for most of the "magic" effects that SCV was famous for in the 1980's. Myron came back on board in 1986 and became the visual designer in 1987. Dave stayed on as a "consultant" thru the 1989 season........and sadly passed away soon after that.

This was a heck of time in SCV's history............and the members of SCV in 1980 (myself included) just kept practicing and working hard. Although we didn't enjoy being 7th place, we WERE damn proud of our product. We knew what was happening for the most part regarding the staff, but they were TRUE professionals and never let it show when it came to rehearsals. What a year that was........as well as 1981!!

Ghost, I think it was a bad idea for me to bring up the topic in the manner in which I did...so I would like to say that the kids of 1980 did a remarkable job to endure the adversity and I'll leave at that.

Ben
