I have no girl in Kalamazoo, so I'll just settle for a drum corps contest. The 1st one I've watched in many years.

I'm not really qualified to review this contest so I'll render some observations. I came on line at the beginning of Cascades. They have a lot of work to do. G-men, I liked the sound better than the marching. I liked the flag work, a lot,but then there's the marching............. The Cavies: From my eyes, clearly, far and away the best and most entertaining show of the night, the best thing I've seen, ever. Some cleaning needs to be done. It moves from beginning to end. To me, musically it has a concise beginning, middle & sure fire blow off at the end......Bluecoats: They followed the Cavies, I watched still being stunned from them. I don't care much for their show. The verbals were good, 1st time I heard them in a corps show, I didn't find them distracting at all. I think the technical prestidigitation of the horn line was fine the first time, but got annoying after awhile. I think the show floundered in the 2nd half & rebounded with a great ending.............BD: I realize they won. However, I didn't care for a 2-3 minute span in the 2nd half of their show. After that they found their way again & built to a fine climax.

General observations:

1. For my tastes the pit was generally too loud. I find that annoying.

2. I like the live web-cast. DCI should be commended.

3. I don't think they had a lot of people there, at least not from the camera's point of view.

Anything can happen in the next few weeks, but BD winning tells me that the Cavies while still very good are probably not going to win DCI this year. BD, unless they have rewritten their entire 2nd half just has such a hot and cold show (1st half vs. 2nd half) and if they beat Cavies with what I saw recently on video, that says a lot. I expected Cavies to win this one.
