Toledo, OH 6/21/08

1st: Cadets - 71.2
2nd: Bluecoats - 68.8
3rd: Boston - 67.1
4th: Glassmen - 63.0
5th: Crossmen - 62.4
6th: Troopers - 57.9
7th: Pioneer - 52.3

Order was as I predicted but the scores were lower overall....a bit surprised by how low. Hoped for Bluecoats to edge out Cadets. Nice to see Boston so close to Bluecoats though.

Crossmen close to Glassmen is nice to see as well.

Great start for Bones!

Visual scores from Toledo, OH:
14.0 Boston Crusaders
13.7 The Cadets
13.1 Bluecoats

Bluecoats took percussion.
Cadets took both effect captions and music ensemble.

You know...

I was kinda disappointed when I first saw these score returns... and then I looked at the caption sheets and remembered that there was not and will not be a full judging line-up for the first few shows. No brass score... no field marching judge...

Given that, I still have some hope here.

My question is... is the 'coats program really that flat and lacking? Is it corny?... dead?... confusing?

was anybody at the show who can offer a review?

I only wonder because as I said before in another thread, the Cadets program is relatively plain... so far. And this margin of defeat is fairly significant.

On the positive. If the Coats score is still on par with their performance for the last several years, then it appears that Boston is doing well.
Nothing is too difficult... only time consuming.

I heard at one point a Cadets tenor player crashed into the Giant Stage on the field and his tenors actually fell off, while a snare drummer did the same later in the show.

Oh yea, way too much talking too, I saw them in Johnstown.PA at a Band Camp a few weeks ago. This is just an awesome show with power and finesse and it is totally ruined with voice over again and again.

So, basically, the exact same as last year?

I would have thought the audible booing last year at finals easily heard on the DVDs would have been enough of a lesson. Maybe by the first time I see them in July things will get ironed out a bit.

The situation where something, if removed, would allow a corps scores to be higher really needs to be examined almost as a matter of responsibility by the corps staff and director, particularly if it doesn't involve playing a musical instrument or visual/colorguard talent.

Are you from the Johnstown area? I went to Richland High School (the rehearsal location) and my wife and I drove down from NY where I live now just to see the corps rehearse a bit.

If you're from the area, PM me... we may have run into each other at some point.

Also, it's funny... perhaps the uniforms add a great deal more to the presentation (I didn't see them with uniforms), but my take of the show was that it was fairly par for the course good... but not really outstanding in terms of composition.
