Searching for the "best" Bb baritone

Post by DDANN » Sat Nov 18, 2006 8:40 am

For several years now I have been playing a Yamaha Bb baritone with Scout House Alumni. I would now like to buy my very own Bb baritone but I have a few issues with my Yamaha.
First, I have incredible problems with sticky valves. No matter how often or how well I clean the horn; no matter what valve oil I use or how often I use it; the 2nd and 3rd valves insist on sticking.
Second, the horn seems incredibly fragile. This is supposed to be a "bugle"! To me bugles should be capable of taking an occassional "gentle" bump without buckling but my horn dents just by looking at it.
I'm hoping some of you might be able to give me some suggestions about alternatives. I'm in Canada (as you might have guessed) and unfortunately there really are very few suppliers or retailers up here where I can go to compare various instruments. If any of you guys or gals are able to give me advice I will likely drive over to Rochester to get my hands on one or two to "test" before I make my selection.
Thanks. I appreciate the help.
