ropes 'n stuff

Post by BAC8687 » Wed Sep 04, 2002 5:02 am

I have 2 questions:

1) did nobody elso like 27's double rope thing?

2) Did anyone know what I was talking about when I said 'skipping' ropes instead of 'jumping' ropes?

I liked 27 when they did the jump rope... They went to the Lance thing during Camelot and passed threw the double rope.... Good year for 27... Great corp and guard uniform!

I remember Star using the hamster wheels and just thought wow couldn't they have better spent all that money!!! Otherwise it was a pretty cool show.

SCV's guard used umbrellas/parasols too....maybe in 1983?

Unbrellas 1993
Parasols 1983
1993? The William Walton show? I don't remember that.

I DO remember SCV using umbrellas or parasols in 1994, their "Red Poppy" show. They also used big push-brooms as rifle substitutes in "Russian Sailors Dance" that same year.

Worst prop? Maybe this isn't the absolute worst, but it was the worst IDEA I've ever seen --

Late 80's Glassmen somehow got on a kite kick. Not only did they have the guard run around with 6' delta kites at some point, but they finished the show with some huge box/delta hybrid kite that, despite every effort by the "kite soloist", had a mind of its own and risked taking out half the corps on its way off the field.

That, and Limited Edition '89's Dancing Piece Of Sh*t -- although that would be categorized under worst color guard costume (even though it was a soloist).

What year did Garfield use Clarinets? ouch that was bad.....
That would be the same year they used actual bright yellow rain slickers and plastic umbrellas, in fact the same year you mention above: 1986.

Santa Clara used parasols in '83 and '84. They used big red umbrellas in the opener to "Miss Saigon" '91. I thought they made a great opening statement. I didn't see '94. Must have been recycled Miss S. umbrellas.

The fans they used during "Wedding Ceremony" were a natural rattan weave. What was so neat was that under stadium lights, they looked like they were spray painted gold. There was always an "ooohh" sound from the audience when they brought the individual fans together to form rotating flowers.

What also was also cool was the use of "tiki torches" during the intence "Morning of the Dragon" For some reason the way they used them you would have thought that they were definately some kind of weapon. Those were exchanged mid-air with the rifles at the end of the tune.

Miss Saigon has turned into one of my most favorite shows. A really great and talented guard that year.

Oh yeah, the "Tent" was used '85 and '86.

Hi Maggie! The fans I mentioned I thought were used by Spirits' guard in maybe 85 or 86? Did SCV also use them as well or were you talking about Spirit?

I'm not exacly sure of the difference between a parasol and an umbrella, but I believe another corps did use parasols/umbrellas. I could be mixing corps' up. I didn't see the shows in 91 or 94.

94 we were warming up. And I missed many of the 90 years. I saw the PBS show maybe 5 times in the 90s, so you definately remember and have seen more 90s shows than I have!

Hi there,

I'm fairly sure Spirit used fans in 85 during Porgy & Bess and didn't Star use parasols in 87 when the guard wore the all pink uniforms, was that My Fair Lady?

Hi Nancy. The fans for Miss Saigon were about 3 feet long and shaped like a leaf with a handle to hold on to. Something you'd see on the movie Casablanca or something. Kind of East Indian style (they probably got them at Pier One ). They did use a yellow Spanish style fan for their Carmen show now that I think of it. I'm afraid I don't remember what Spirit or Star used in their shows.

Basicaly, "Parasols" are umbrellas that are small, lightweight and very "frilly". Ladys used them in the "olden" days to keep the sun off their faces. When you think of Miss Saigons "Umbrellas" think of a big red one that shades your patio table! It was pretty cool. If you get a chance, be sure to see SCVs Miss Saigon show. Not only does the guard use all kinds of stuff to tell the story, the drumline is incredable with all the goodies they used to create the mood. (like Helicopters? ).

Cavies red balls in The Planets Suite (83?) - 'you should get some talc for that problem son'

The red ball was a prop for our 1985 The Planets show. Nobody felt more silly and dumb than I did bouncing that stupid ball off my skull  . I am afraid that talc cannot help this

"Porgy and Bess," pink uni's for the guard, Star of Indiana 1988
"My Fair Lady," walking boxes (and harmon mutes for the sopranos), Suncoast Sound 1987

It's okay, I mix up my years, too! ^_^;
