Comments: Here come the Blue Devils!!! Their first championship, won with a first-class horn line, drums from outer space, and superior marching. I remember watching the victory performance from the upper deck of Franklin Field. As I remember it, they actually *marched* the victory performance, as opposed to re-doing the show in concert formation as the winners do now.

Madison Scouts played the "Stars & Stripes Forever" the way it was meant to be played (with a little interpolation of "76 Trombones" in the middle of it). Philadelphia in 1976 was in the middle of the nation's Bicentennial celebration, and was host to many thrilling events that summer. The 4th of July saw President Ford speaking at Independence Hall, and a mega-parade in downtown Philly. Unfortunately, 1976 was also a fateful year in terms of disease: Philly was hit with the first-recorded outbreak of Legionnaires Disease following the American Legion convention in August that year. The disease proved fatal to quite a few of the attendees. I worked in a center city hotel that summer, and remember that 3 legionnaires who had stayed at my hotel were among the fatalities. The source of the disease was eventually traced to the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel's air-conditioning system. Whoops, got off the track there, but hope the above was of interest anyway.
